Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State on Monday held a meeting with stakeholders in the Local Government administration in the light of the Supreme Court’ s decision granting financial autonomy to local governments in country.
The Governor said that the stakeholders agreed to set up a committee to deliberate on how to meet the challenges that are bound to arise due to the ruling on local government finances.
According to him, the state will be confronted with payment of salaries and pensions that have been pending.
Governor who disclosed this on his official X handle formerly twiiter said: “Earlier today, we held a meeting of stakeholders in local government administration to address some of the issues that may arise from the Supreme Court decision regarding the financial autonomy of local government councils.
“I outlined some of the challenges that may come up with payment of salaries and pensions including the N55 billion still owed pensioners which our structure was helping to reduce.
“We set up a committee to devise practical steps that we can take in Oyo State to address the challenges so that we do not return to where we were before this administration assumed office in May 2019.
