The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has rescued six injured passengers after a painted Volkswagen commercial bus (KRD 436 XF) suffered brake failure on the Third Mainland Bridge.
The Special Adviser to Lagos State Governor on Transportation, Mr Sola Giwa, who disclosed this in a statement on Monday in Lagos said that the road accident occured at the Adekunle corridor, inward Iyana-Oworonsoki on the Third Mainland Bridge.
“Initial findings indicate that the fully-laden commercial bus, transporting passengers with assorted household effects, reportedly experienced a sudden mechanical failure of its braking system while on transit.
“This mechanical malfunction precipitated a loss of vehicular control, culminating in the bus capsizing onto its flank.
“The incident resulted in six passengers – two adult males and four adult females – sustaining serious bodily injuries, while one passenger suffered a critical ocular injury at the instant of impact,” he said.
According to him, LASTMA officials on routine surveillance duties within the affected corridor responded promptly and extricated all six critically injured victims from the wreckage.
He added that a good Samaritan swiftly transported four of the injured passengers to an undisclosed medical facility for urgent treatment.
“ Officers of the Nigeria Police Force, Adekunle Division, rendered crucial assistance by conveying one male victim who sustained multiple fractures to a hospital for intensive medical care.
“Operatives of the Lagos State Ambulance Service administered immediate on-site medical attention to another injured passenger at the scene of the incident,” he said.
He cautioned motorists, particularly commercial transport operators, to desist from overloading.
He urged them to give priority attention to mechanical assessments, with emphasis on braking systems, prior to embarking on journeys within or beyond Lagos State. (NAN)
