Oyo Gov vows to promote religious freedom, harmony, tolerance

As Muslim women celebrate the World Hijab Day, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, says his administration will make policies that promote religious freedom, harmony and tolerance across the state.

Makinde made the promise on Wednesday in Ibadan, while felicitating with Muslims across the state and Nigeria in general, on the celebration of World Hijab Day.

Addressing members of the Alakhwaat Muslim Organisation and Al-Mu’minaat Organisation (the Believing Women), who were on a courtesy visit, Makinde said that his administration would never discriminate nor be biased in providing good governance to people of the state.

The governor, who was represented by his Special Assistant on Islamic Affairs, Imam AbdulRasheed AbduAzeez, urged people of the state to embrace peaceful co-existence, irrespective of their religion affiliations.

He appealed to religious leaders in the state to continue to educate their followers on religious harmony and tolerance.

The governor congratulated Muslim faithful for the celebration of the 2023 World Hijab Day, assuring them of his support.

In his remarks, AbduAzeez recalled that in 2019, some members of the opposition parties in the state predicted that Makinde would not allow the use of Hijab in public schools, “but Makinde’s administration has proved them wrong”.

According to him, our governor, being someone from both Muslim and Christian families would never discriminate against Muslims.

“In the last four years, Makinde has been supportive to Muslims and doesn’t deny them of what belong to them.

“In fact, various Muslim organisations in the state have shown their support for the re-election of Makinde so that the good work would continue,” AbduAzeez said.

He said Makinde was happy and appreciated the women in Hijab, noting that they represent women of good virtues.

On significance of Hijab Day, the Alakhwaat Muslim Organisation and Al-Mu’minaat Organisation, said, “Hijab Day is observe yearly to promote the dignity of Muslim women”.

They urged all Muslim women and girls in the state to imbibe the use of Hijab.

“Using Hijab is what Allah recommended for Muslim women to cover every part of their body because that’s what Allah want.

“Muslim women should dress in decent way and use Hijab properly, be a model and good moral example for others.”

The two organisations further implored Muslim parents and guardians to inculcate good moral virtues into their children and wards.

They appreciated Gov Makinde for providing good governance for the people of the state and promised to support the reelection bid of the governor.
