The Federal Government has appointed Olatunji Rilwan Disu as the Acting Inspector-General of Police, placing a seasoned officer with more than three decades of experience at the helm of the Nigeria Police Force.
Disu, an indigene of Lagos State from Lagos Island Local Government Area, joined the police force on May 18, 1992, as an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP). Over the years, he has held strategic operational, intelligence, and administrative positions across the country.
Before his appointment, Disu served as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Alagbon, Lagos, a role he assumed in February 2026. He previously headed the Special Protection Unit (SPU) at Force Headquarters, Abuja, between March 2025 and February 2026.
His service record also includes a posting at the Federal Capital Territory Police Command from October 2024 to March 2025. From November 2023 to October 2024, he served as Commissioner of Police for the Rivers State Police Command, where he oversaw security operations in one of the country’s most strategically important states.
Disu also held the position of Commissioner of Police, Administration and Intelligence, at the Force Intelligence Bureau. As Deputy Commissioner of Police, he led the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), and later served as DCP, Admin Operations, at Force Headquarters.
Between 2015 and 2021, he commanded the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Lagos, playing a significant role in strengthening urban policing, crime prevention, and rapid emergency response.
Earlier in his career, Disu served as Assistant Commissioner of Police in the Criminal Investigation Department in Rivers State. He was Officer in Charge of Anti-Kidnapping operations and led units of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in Ondo State and Oyo State. He also worked as a Divisional Police Officer in Ondo State and handled anti-fraud investigations at the State Criminal Investigation Department in Katsina.
Notably, in 1999, Disu served as Aide-De-Camp to then Lagos State Governor, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, an assignment widely regarded as a formative period in his career that exposed him to executive security and high-level administration.
With his appointment as Acting Inspector-General of Police, Disu is expected to lead ongoing reforms, enhance intelligence-driven policing, and strengthen internal security operations nationwide.
