The Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS), Lagos Branch, has called on Nigerians to keep humanity alive by helping vulnerable people and communities.
The Chairman of the branch, Mrs Adebola Kolawole, made the call at the sidelines of the society’s thanksgiving service to mark the 161st Anniversary of the Red Cross.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the thanksgiving service was held at the Trinity House in Lagos.
The theme of this year’s World Red Cross Day (WRCD) celebration is, ‘Keeping Humanity Alive.’
Kolawole said one of the ways of keeping humanity alive was to ensure that the vulnerable people and communities were given support.
“If we must keep humanity alive, we must go out of our way to save lives.
“We must do something to give succour to the needy,” she said..
The chairman urged Nigerians to help by giving palliatives and clothing to people in need.
Also, the branch Secretary, Mr Olakunle Lasisi, said the Red Cross was not limited to emergency response but had other activities, particularly targeted to communities.
“Now that this year’s flood has been announced to be more terrible than ever, we need to do a lot of disaster risk and reduction.
“Telling the communities what to do so that the impact will be reduced,” he said.
Lasisi urged Nigerians to keep supporting the Red Cross to help with the society’s humanitarian services.
On his part, Pastor Ituah Ighodalo, Senior Pastor of Trinity House said that everything pertaining to human beings was regarded as humanity.
Ighodalo, who is also a Platinum Patron of NRCS, praised the Red Cross for their response to emergencies and other humanitarian services, including, ensuring food security.
The pastor said sacrificial grace was one of the seven graces of God, which could be seen in the Red Cross’ service to humanity.
“If you love God, you love people and actually you love God through loving people.
“I’m extremely glad and impressed that they have chosen to come to the house of God to thank God and mark their founder’s 161st anniversary.
“They love God, they respect God and they’ve come to thank God for the grace he has given them to serve humanity,” he said.
He wished the Red Cross well and prayed that God continues to help them.(NAN)
