Pope Leo XIV got emotional on Sunday as he received the Ring of the Fisherman immediately after the inauguration Mass to mark the beginning of his papacy as the 267th successor to St Peter.
According to Vatican News, the Pope received
the Ring of the Fisherman from Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization, during the Mass of Inauguration of his pontificate in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday, May 18.
As St Peter is known as the fisherman Apostle, the ring is called the Ring of the Fisherman, or the Piscatory Ring, symbolising the continuous lineage from the first Pope to today.
When the Pope dies, his Ring of the Fisherman and the Lead Seal are marked with a chisel, ensuring the seal cannot be forged. Every ring is unique and personal to each Pope.
