Plateau impounds trucks over indiscriminate parking

Jos Metropolitan Development Board (JMDB) has impounded some trucks and other vehicles within the city centre over indiscriminate parking.

Speaking during the exercise on Tuesday in Jos, General Manager of the board, Mr Hart Bankat, said that the move was aimed at enforcing the executive order recently signed by .Gov. Caleb Mutfwang.

The governor had recently signed the executive order No. 003 of 2024 which prohibited indiscriminate parking of trucks and other vehicles on major roads, street trading, movement of trucks within the city centre between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. and erection of illegal buildings, among others.

Bankat stated that the move was also targetted at achieving the ‘Greater Jos Master Plan’ and ensuring sanity and free flow of traffic within the metropolis.

”What we are doing here is the commencement of the enforcement of the executive order recently signed by the governor.

”Today, we have arrested some trucks and other vehicles over indiscriminate parking along major roads and those coming into the city within the prohibited time.

“We have a mobile court that will try them and once found guilty, they will pay the fines, as stipulated by the order,” he said.

The general manager assured residents of the state that the board would sustain the fight  against indiscriminate parking, illegal errection of buildings and other unwholesome practices.

Also speaking, Commissioner for Information and Communications in the state, Mr Musa Ashoms, said that the move would not only sanitise the state, but tackle crime and criminality.

Ashoms reiterated the Mutfwang-led administration’s commitment to regaining the lost glory of Jos, insisting that no stone would be left unturned toward making the city the envy of all.

”Places where these trucks are parked have become crime dens and venues for drug peddling and all kinds of immoral acts.

”This government is out to sanitise Jos and we will not rest on our oars until we achieve this.

”These roads are built with tax payers’ money and Plateau residents must be seen enjoying these facilities and not allowing them to become harbours for criminals.

”We will not tolerate illegal buildings and trading activties by the roadsides, among other illegal activities,” he said.

The team, compromising personnel of the Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO), staffers of JMDB, among others, carried out the enforcement at different locations within Jos. (NAN)
