My defection in best interest of Rivers people, says Gov Fubara

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has opened up about the emotional and political weight he has carried throughout the prolonged crisis rocking the state’s political space.

Speaking during the commissioning of the newly expanded Ahoada–Omoku road, the governor said he has endured a lot simply because he chose not to publicly defend himself while different narratives circulated about the conflict in the state.

According to him, one of the major issues has been his inability to meet with the Speaker, Martins Amaewhule, and the lawmakers, not because he is avoiding dialogue, but because meetings were being tied to the approval of PDP leader, Nyesom Wike. Fubara explained that he prefers not to bypass party leaders so that he is not accused of dividing the house.

He stated that every attempt he has made toward peace has been genuine, and he has repeatedly told stakeholders that he is willing to meet the lawmakers’ demands if it will bring stability to the state.

Fubara also addressed his defection from the PDP to the APC, insisting that it was a move made in the best interest of Rivers State. He noted that development cannot thrive in an environment ruled by constant hostility and emphasized that his administration has benefited greatly from the support of President Bola Tinubu.

At the event, the governor reminded residents that the road project was part of his campaign commitments and thanked communities for standing with him despite ongoing political drama.

He stressed one final point: many people have judged him based only on what they heard from others, but the real story has not been told. He expressed hope that his openness will foster unity and lead to a more peaceful Rivers State.
