Laos intensifies efforts to enhance education

Laos’ Ministry of Education and Sports convened a meeting to address key challenges in the education sector, explore effective solutions, and outline strategic directions for future development.

The meeting, held in the Lao capital Vientiane from Monday to Tuesday, brought together officials from the education and sports sectors nationwide.

The local news website Lao Pattana News reported on Thursday.

The meeting acknowledged that the education sector continues to face significant challenges, as ongoing regional and international uncertainties are likely to persist in affecting Laos.

While the domestic situation is gradually improving, long-standing economic, financial, and budgetary constraints remain major obstacles to the development of education, science, and sports.

The meeting approved the report on the implementation of the development plan for the education, science, and sports sectors for the 2024 to 2025 academic year.

It also urged relevant authorities to intensify efforts to meet unmet targets, particularly those related to enrolment and dropout rates in basic education.

The meeting also approved the strategic direction for the 2025 to 2026 academic year, setting key goals that include increasing enrolment rates and reducing dropout rates.

It also ensured that teachers and educational personnel at all levels receive continuous professional development.

The plan aimed to support at least 30,000 out-of-school youth annually through non-formal vocational training, and to graduate a minimum of 10,000 students each year from vocational education programmes.

In addition, the ministry had planned to introduce 10 international higher education curricula to strengthen academic linkages at both regional and global levels.

These strategic goals reflected the ministry’s commitment to enhancing educational access, improving quality, and aligning with national development priorities.
