Ferscoat Secondary School in Olude Ipaja area of Lagos has deployed new strategies to beat, the record of last year set by its learners, in their external examinations this year.
The Principal, Mr Fred Opata while speaking on the new approach to surpass the previous records set by its learners in the West African Examination Council (WAEC) examinations and the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board examinations (JAMB) explained that the new strategies became operational in the first term.
To ensure that the strategies deliver as planned, Mr Opata said that members of the school’s management team have been constituted into a Monitoring Unit to ensure the effective follow-up on the learners in collaboration with their parents.
“We newly initiated a closed circle monitoring unit where the Principal, VPs, HODs as the top management of the school closely monitor the students, the examination candidates, those in SS3.
“We share them among ourselves and we evaluate their performance in class, we check them, we monitor them, we teach them, we ensure that they read, we involve their parents and we work as a unit”.
“That is why I called it closed monitoring unit. This was just introduced recently.
“In the second term, there are so many activities. We have the JAMB exams coming up, we have the WAEC, the NECO for SS3 coming up and we also have the junior WAEC, that is, the Lagos State Basic Education Certificate Examination, (BECE) these exams are all to be written by our learners”
“What are our strategies? Well, the strategy started July 2023 with the SS3 and the first strategy we have in place is called the fourth term.
“This is a policy in which the learners don’t go home during the holidays and they are put through SS3 topics and by the time they are resuming September (all final year students), we have only six weeks and then we are done with the syllabus for WAEC and we are done with the syllabus for SS3.
“By January which we started this year, all we are doing is revision.
“And the second strategy is serious revision that is done with the student for a period of 4-5 months. Every day, within 4 – 5 months, is revision that we have for the students.
“And the third strategy is the promotion of zero tolerance for examination mal-practices and in doing that, we give at least 5-6 mock exams starting from September 2023 all the way to April 2024.”
“These are the things that we do to ensure that the learners are ready for the exams and this is part of the strategy that we put together into this program.”
