Victor Osimhen scored and assisted as Nigeria defeated Algeria 2-0 on Saturday, securing a semi-final place at the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations ( AFCON) in Morocco.
The much anticipated quarter-final encounter between the Super Eagles and the Desert Foxes was played at the Stade de Marrakech with over 32,452 spectators in attendance.
The Super Eagles faced stern resistance before the break, with Algeria compact in midfield, limiting chances in spite of the pressure from Osimhen, Akor Adams and Ademola Lookman.
Nigeria broke through after halftime when Osimhen powered home Bruno Onyemaechi’s cross in the 47th minute, his fourth goal of the tournament.
Ten minutes later, Osimhen turned provider, releasing Akor Adams, who rounded goalkeeper Luca Zidane and finished calmly to double Nigeria’s lead.
Algeria pushed forward in response but lacked penetration, as Nigeria’s disciplined defence protected goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali with authority.
The victory sends Nigeria into their 16th AFCON semi-final, where the Super Eagles will meet hosts Morocco in Rabat.
Meanwhile, Peter Obi, 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has congratulated the Super Eagles for defeating Algeria in the quarter-final match in the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations ( AFCON) in Morocco.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra, in his congratulatory message posted on his X handle, said that the 2-0 victory sends a clear message to the rest of the continent.
