The overthrown President of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, has confirmed his arrest.
“I have indeed been overthrown. I can’t say too much, otherwise they’ll confiscate my phone. I’m currently at the military headquarters,” he states.
Embalo says that his Minister of the Interior, Botché Candé, has also been arrested, as well as the highest-ranking military officials: the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces and his deputy, Generals Biague Na Ntan and Mamadou Touré.
He maintains that he has not suffered any violence and accuses the army chief of staff of being the perpetrator of the coup.
The opposition figures Domingos Simões Pereira and Fernando Dias da Costa have also been arrested and are being held at the Bissau airbase.
