Hunger protests begin as organisers defy entreaties, threats

The nationwide protest against hunger and hardship is beginning today in spite of entreaties and threats from government and its agencies to shelve the planned action.

Since the notice was given, there have been entreaties and in some instances, to the organisers to shelve the plans given the dangerous dimensions the protests may lead to.

Government officials have appealed to the organisers of the protest to consider the achievements of the President Bola Tinubu-led government to bring succour to Nigerians.

Among the demands listed by the organisers is the removal of fuel subsidies which led to tension and inflation leading to high cost of consumer goods and other items.

Apart from series of palliatives promised and delivered, the Federal Government had to appealed to organised labour to suspend its planned strike with the agreement reached on the minimum wage which was agreed to N70, 000 and has been signex to law to demonstrate government’s commitment to the demands.

The legal angle to control the protest must have also been ignored by the organisers.

Meanwhile the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun has also warned against violence during the protest adding that Policemen and other enforcement agenxies have been mobilised to curtail any acts of violence during the period of the protest expected to last for 10 days.
