A total of 231 secondary schools would take part in the 2023 edition of tax club quiz competition organized by the Kwara State Internal Revenue Service (KWIRS) in collaboration with the Kwara State Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development.
The annual Tax Club Quiz Competition is opened to all Senior Secondary Schools in the state, both public and private.
Students from these senior secondary schools would compete for the top prize of N2.5 million.
A statement by KWIRS Head, Corporate Affairs, Titilayomi Ogunwale on Friday in Ilorin said the quiz competition is an initiative of Kwara Government aimed at nurturing school children to have a clear understanding of the role of tax in the development of an economy and to become tax compliant citizens.
The preliminary rounds of the competition would commence on Tuesday, June 20, 2023 and end on Monday, June 26, 2023 across the three senatorial districts of the state.
According to the statement, schools in Kwara North 1, which comprises schools in Baruten and Kaiama Local Government Areas would meet at Ilesha Baruba for the preliminaries, while Kwara North 2, which has schools in Edu, Patigi, and Moro Local Government Areas, would meet in Lafiagi for the preliminary rounds.
Schools from Kwara South Senatorial Districts will gather at Okeya-Ipo High School for the preliminary rounds, and the KW-IRS, CBT centre at its Phase III Office, in Ilorin, will host schools in Kwara Central Senatorial District for the preliminary stages.
The Preliminary stages will produce the best Six Schools from each of the Senatorial District in the State to meet for the Semi-Final round.
The overall best six schools would compete in the final round of the 2023 KW-IRS Tax Quiz Competition scheduled to take place on Thursday, November 2, 2023.
“Kwara State under the administration of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq continues to make impacts across all sectors, and this explains the growing interest of schools in educational activities and the growth in the number of applicants recorded for this year.
“A total number 231 schools that registered within the set time frame represents an exponential improvement over the 142 and 219 applicants in 2021 and 2022, respectively.
“While we wish all schools the best of luck as they commence preparations for the tax competition, it is pertinent to enjoin students to embrace the essence of the competition which is the creation of tax awareness and knowledge towards building a better society,” the statement said.
