.….generates N36. 4b in two years
The Kwara State Internal Revenue Service (KWIRS) has said that its target for tjhis year is N38bn in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) more than what it generated (N36.4bn) in the last two years.
Speaking at a media parley in Ilorin, the Executive Chairman of KWIRS, Dr. Muritala Awodun said the sum of N17.4bn was generated in 2016 and N19.4bn in 2017 bringing the total sum to N38.bn.
He said; “we were able to move IGR forward from N17.4bn in 2016, and N19.4bn in 2017” pointing out that the revenue generated in 2016 was a good start up adding that the revenue body had its own share of challenges which was why it could only generate N19. 4bn as at December , 2017.
The challenges he added, made it difficult to meet its N24bn and as well identified social pressure on the Service as one of the strong factors that impeded its efforts.
The chairman said the revenue body has resolved to adopt ‘PRAISE’ meaning; praise the people, reinforce and retain tax payers, advanced tax education, intensify and improve on staff commitment, systematic reporting (meeting the media regularly) and engaging to enforce compliance to excel in its task this year.
Dr. Awodun at the occasion debunked speculations that KWIRS is a consultancy outfit for the Kwara state government for just four years pointing out that himself as the chairman would serve a term of four years.
According to him, KWIRS is an agency of government that was established by law to generate tax for government the proper way and block the old system that was full of leakages.
