……….for economic growth
The Emir of Shonga, His Royal Highness, Halilu Yahaya, has said that sustainable agricultural and rural development is crucial to national economic development.
Yahaya said this on Thursday in Ilorin, Kwara State in a lecture delivered at Agricultural and Rural Management Training Institute (ARMTI).
The lecture entitled “Harnessing the Potentials of Traditional Institutions for Integrated Agricultural and Rural Development in Nigeria” was organised by ARMTI.
Yahaya, who said that diversification of the economy from the nonoil sector to agriculture, can be effective only through traditional institutions said this while delivering a lecture in Ilorin on Thursday.
The Emir said that government at all levels should engage traditional institutions in planning and implementation of rural development policies.
“Sustainable agricultural development is crucial to national economic development.
“If we want the economic diversification of the present government to be effective and sustainable, traditional institutions must be recognised.
“There should be harmonization of roles between the formal governmental structures complimented by traditional institutions.
“Traditional institutions have always been and they are the custodians of customs and tradition”, he said.
The Emir identified peace as the major proponent of economic and technological development.
“As Nigeria is moving from a mono economy to diversifying the economy, peace is a major proponent of this development.
“As much as development of agriculture in Nigeria lies in the hand of traditional institutions, positive attitudinal change is needed at all levels of development in the nation.
“We must be practical and more relevant especially in the development of agriculture and rural areas”, he said.
