NEWMAP: Gombe To Plant 300 hectares Of Woodlot

Gombe State is to plant 300 hectares of woodlot in seven out of the

11 Local Government Areas of the state.

Management Project (NEWMAP), a World Bank assisted project of the

Federal Ministry of Environment, Mr Richard James, disclosed this in Kaltungo Local

Government Area of Gombe state on Tuesday during a visit to one of the

woodlot plantation sites.


He said 300 hectares of woodlot were earmarked for Gombe, but only 60

hectares was approved in three pilot LGAs namely; Kaltungo,

Yamaltu-Deba and Kwami.


According to him, 20 hectares would be planted in each of the three

LGAs, adding that the project was under a component of NEWMAP known as

Degraded Land Rehabilitation.


He said the woodlot will prevent desert encroachment and also serve as

wind breaker.


The communication officer said arrangement has been concluded for the

project, while consultants went round and checked the sites for the



James said African indigenous trees which were endangered species

would be planted in the woodlot as well as other economic trees of

enormous importance to the public.


In his response, the ward head of Poshereng in Kaltungo LGA one of the

woodlot location, commended the Federal Government under President

Muhammadu Buhari for the wonderful initiative.


He assured NEWMAP that the community will nurture the trees to maturity.
