Gombe Health Care Agency Cures 13069 Malnourished Children

…….. in 2017

The Nutrition Coordinator, Gombe State, Malam Suleiman Mamman, says that no fewer than 13,069 children have been cured of malnutrition in Gombe in 2017.

Mamman told newsmen in Gombe that the number was part of a total of 14,143 malnourished children admitted across four Community Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) centres of the Gombe State Healthcare Development Agency in 2017.

The CMAM centres are in Gombe, Dukku, Nafada and Kaltungo Local Government Areas.

According to the coordinator, the cured children have since been discharged.

“Out of 14,143 malnourished children admitted into the four CMAM centres, 13,069 were cured and discharged. 710 children defaulted and did not continue with the treatment for a reason known only to their parents.

“One hundred and fifty children died while on treatment, and 214 children were not cured because of one complication or the other.

“The children who were not cured were treated for eight months but there was no improvement. Most of them tested HIV/AIDS positive and have been referred to various hospitals across the states to receive treatment,’’ Mamman said.

The coordinator said his office, through the Young Child Feeding programme unit, embarked on awareness campaign across the state.

He said that the unit taught women how to prepare locally available food for their children to ensure their healthy growth.

According to Mamman, support groups in various communities across the state have been trained on how to prepare nutritional meals, which they are expected to pass down to women in their various communities.

He said that the support groups were also trained on personal hygiene and importance of immunizing children.
