Government and major stakeholders in sports have been called upon to do more for schools sports in order to discover young talents in sport and get them prepared for national and international spotlight.
The proprietor of Ferscoat International schools and the Director of Studies, Pastor Felix Opata while delivering his speech at the 11th edition of the competition tasked the agencies of government including the ministry of sports to devise strategies of discovering and nurturing sports talents from the schools.
He said that Ferscoat schools deliberately encourage the learners to discover and develop their talents with the inter-house competition and that the school has remained consistent with it for more than ten years.
He also called on the parents to encourage their wards to develop their hidden talents in sports beyond their academic prowess while acknowledging the roles of the parents in assisting the school in the organization of the event.
“It is of noteworthy to mention that the crops of parents that we have now are people that understand sports as part of education.
He expressed the school’s appreciation to the parents for their support to ensuring the success of the event,
He promised that with their cooperation, the school might sponsor talents discovered at the inter-house sports to go higher in their chosen sporting activity.
“We can sponsor some of them to get to highest heights.”
He advocated that as a matter of policy, the government must go beyond the schools inter-house sports competition to harness talents at the grassroots who can be groomed to both national and international standards though constant training and exposure to further competitions.
The event featured various games which covered the nursery, primary, the junior and secondary schools learners who emerged for the finals from the heat event which took place a week to the competition.
Dignitaries at the event apart from the parent were representatives to the Lagos State ministry of education, the traditional ruler of Ipaja, where the school is based and other invited guests.
The Principal, Ferscoat Comprehensive Academy, Mr. Frederick Opata said the event is necessary and important because it is a way of catching them young at the grassroots.
“We believe at this event we are going to identify some great talents and that is why we have a sport icon represented at this event and will be able to pinpoint who can go far.”
Speaking on the meeting point between academics and sporting activities, Fred Opata explained that there are three domain of education and psychomotor is one of them and that is the sporting activities the school is having because without sports there is no complete education.
Mrs. Rose Ashefor, the head teacher of Ferscoat Nursery and Primary School said the event is aimed at catching them young from the grass roots, its aim at bringing the innate, the talent in them, in the area of sports.
“Our aim is to tap them young and expose them and encourage them to also explore that part of their lives and not just academics,” she explained.
