Chapel Election: Kwara NUJ Defies National Body, Inaugurates New Exco

The Kwara Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), on Friday called the bluff of the union’s President, Mr Chris Isiguzo, by inaugurating executive members of the Correspondent Chapel against directive.

The council, led by its Chairman, Abdulwahab Umar, defied the directive of Isiguzo, who directed that the controversial planned election of the correspondents be discontinued.

He also ordered that an open and transparent arrangement be put in place to elect the new executives.

The crisis however got to the peak on Thursday when Umar announced his readiness to inaugurate a factional executive midwife by an election committee that he was sympathetic to.

To prevent a breakdown of law and order, the state police command had intervened, compelling both parties to sign an undertaking.

However, on Friday morning, the Secretariat of the Chapel was locked up while Umar carried out inauguration at the NUJ Press Centre, Ilorin contrary to NUJ President’s and police directive.

The executive council members inaugurated has Mr. Biola Azeez of the Tribune newspapers as the chairman and Mr. Kehinde Akinpelu of the Daily Times as the vice chairman.

Romoke Ahmad of the Daily Trust newspaper was sworn in as the Treasurer, Mr. Kayode Abdulazeez of the Nigerian Pilot newspaper as the Secretary and Miss Mosunmola Ayobami of the Western Post as the Assistant Secretary.
