Determined to alleviate the sufferings of farmers, the World Bank Assisted Delta state Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project ( NEWMAP) has concluded training for no fewer than 5,000 farmers on climate change adaption farming project implementation established in Obomkpa and Ukwu- Nze Communities in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta state.
Delta state Coordinator, Mr Isaac Ufiofio who confirmed this to our Correspondent in Asaba on Thursday, said the essence of the training farming was to teach the farmers and give them technical assistance to improve their farms’ yields and livelihood throughout the year 2020.
Ufiofio explained that the training programme was also aimed at building capacity of the farmers so that they will be able to adhere to modern practices of climate change that is totally inevitable, adding” usually there is a hunger gap between November and April during the dry season, we have been able to show them farming practices that will continue throughout the year 2020 for the farmers to achieve bumper harvest”
Speaking further the NEWMAP said “also, this a very successful programme and we adhere strictly to Social distancing as regards to Covid-19 Pandemic disease by distributing face masks to them and ensuring every participant wore their facemasks in Compliance with the directive of the National Centre for Disease Control ( NCDC) ” and called on the farmers to adopt the modern way of farming techniques that was far better than their traditional way of farming.
He said the modern method will enable the farmers in the area get higher yields through application of low cost organic fertilizer and bio insecticide for improved crop production and Control, adding that over 10,000 bundles of Cassava stems of pro- Vitamin A, maize, coconut, orange, pear and other varieties of seedlings to the farmers
